Learn how state law has impacted the medical marijuana program
As the medical cannabis industry continues to expand and evolve, more states are recognizing the therapeutic benefits of marijuana. While Maryland law now allows all adults aged 21 years or older to purchase cannabis products like licensed dispensaries like Blair Wellness Center, patients interested in the medical marijuana program still need to obtain certain permissions to gain access to the program. In this blog post, we’ll explore the steps you need to take to gain access to this beneficial treatment.
Maryland Cannabis Administration
HB 556 and SB 516 established a new agency, the Maryland Cannabis Administration, to regulate all cannabis business in the state. The former medical commission has been transitioned to this new agency to continue to provide services for businesses and patients in the medical program.
Medical Marijuana Cards
A medical card is still needed to purchase cannabis sold as part of the medical cannabis program. If you’ve never applied for a medical marijuana card, the process may feel a bit daunting. There are several steps you must complete prior to qualifying for your card. Fortunately, the state of Maryland has developed a streamlined registration system designed to help local residents gain relief.
1. Create an account with the Maryland Cannabis Administration
Before you meet with a physician, you must create an account with the Maryland Cannabis Administration. You’ll need to provide a valid email address, your social security number, an electronic copy of a US government-issued ID card, and proof of a Maryland address.
Register here as an adult, or learn about registration for minors here.
2. Get written certification from a registered physician
Once your application is approved, Maryland residents are required to visit a registered physician to obtain written certification. Keep in mind, your certification must be filled within 120 days. Treatable conditions include anorexia, chronic pain, wasting syndrome, severe pain, severe nausea, PTSD, and many more.
